Santa Maria Cookies-4-Soldiers Packing Events

Every Girl Scout cookie season - January to April - the girls in the Santa Maria cluster collect donations to buy Girl Scout cookies to send to our adopted Overseas Soldiers. The girls love to spoil them by making special care packages to send!

We adopt about a dozen or more Overseas Soldiers from our church, schools, and local community and gain required permissions from their families to spoil them. Families are asked to send a picture and tidbits of information like what their favorite hobby and girl scout cookies are! Then the girls begin making cards and writing letters to our adopted soldiers.

We collect donations from our church as well as from the community at our booth sales and from our friends & families during the individual cookie sales. We take all the money we collect and figure out how many care packages we can ship and then how many cookies we can afford to purchase. We also collect magazines, candies and condiments from our local McDonalds.

Once the cookies are bought, the girls get together at two "Cookies-4-Soldiers Packing Events" . The girls choose a soldier and go from station to station as they pack up the goodies they have collected into the care packages for their chosen soldier. They make a personal card for their soldier and fill out the custom forms and proceed to the checkout station before sealing the box.

We have always been blessed that we can prepare multiple care packages for each of our adopted soldiers. These packages are shipped out about every 2 weeks until they are all delivered. We have a web page where we share our progress and keep it updated with letters from our adopted Soldiers.

Come early and help unload the cars and set up the rooms for the assembly line of stations. Also help is needed to load the care packages back into the vans for transportation home.

Girls go from station to station making the box and filling them with goodies and special cards!

The card making station and the condiments station with lots of smiles!

In April 2010 we had one of our adopted soldiers come visit while the girls packed boxes to ship to our soldiers. It was a priceless moment!

It fills our hearts with joy to watch the girls prepare the care packages for our adopted Soldiers. It is such an incredible learning experience for the girls and also such a worthy lesson that needs to be instilled in our youth. Freedom is not free and we should thank the fine young men and women that risk their lives to protect our freedoms. This service project touches the hearts of all that choose to join in the fun!
